The development of fireplace style is very closely linked to the varying schools of thought. Both Italian and French fireplaces reached their zenith in the 15th century during the Renaissance, and again later in the 18th century. The carved ornamentation is extremely rich and varied.
*Stone Fireplaces
The stone fireplaces we offer originate from Burgundy, the Jura, Provence and central Italy. These fireplaces are usually rather large, as they occupied a central position in the kitchen, serving both as a place for food preparation and for eating. In rural homesteads, they tended to have a rather plain shape, with straight architraves and pillars that are inclined forward. In stately homes or monasteries, stone fireplaces were often decorated in some way; some were adorned with depictions of hunting scenes, or perhaps a coat of arms. The hearth was equipped with briquettes as well as a cast-iron fire guard on the rear wall.
